m theFederal Electric RailwaysCommission Report THAT street railway service and jitney service can-not permanently exist and pay their own way incompetition with each other under any ordinary urbanconditions seems to be well established by experienceand by the conditions inherent in local transportationservice, but the belief is general that the motor bus mayproperly be used to supplement the service rendered bythe street cars. The motor bus may be used to render asort of supplementary service, such as the service nowrendered on Fifth Avenue and certain other high-graderesidential streets in New York City by the FifthAvenue Coach Company, or the buses may be operatedon other independent routes merely as feeders to thestreet railway system to take care of traffic in partiallydeveloped territory in advance of the time when streetrailway tracks can be laid with reasonable assurancethat the investment will be self-sustaining.
