L FOR ELECTRIC RAILWAYS The Street Railway Signal Company of Philadelphiahas just placed upon the market a new type of con-tactor signal that can be arranged for either singleor double track. A description of the general featuresof the single track form is given herewith. These sig-nals, which are called Model E, are of the trolley-contact operated, all-light type, having the three-posi-tion aspect for single-track opposing protection b, tpermitting following movements as recommended bythe block signal committee of the American ElectricRailway Association in its 1913 report. In the past trolley contact operated signals usuallyhave been mounted on existing trolley poles, but theModel E signals may be mounted either on individualiron poles or else upon existing trolley poles. Whenthe signal is mounted on an individual iron pole theaspect case is carried by an iron bracket which is fast-ened to the signal pole. This relay case contains thecounting relays, the neutral relays, resistances and aterminal board which has the fuses and disconnectingswitches mounted thereon. The relay case has doors infront and in back through which complete access tothe apparatus is afforded. The aspects are as follows: Red alone—Stop. Do not pass contactor. Green—Proceed by contactor to operate signal. Red and yellow—Proceed if green aspect changesto this on passing contactor. Red and yellow—Block occupied by car running insame direction if car is approaching this aspect. Pro-ceed under control if yellow light changes to oppositeside of red on running under contactor. When the block is unoccupied a green light shows ineach of the signals, of which one is installed at eachend of the block. A car entering the block at oneend changes the signal at the other end from green tored, and also changes the first signal from gree
