Plate D 2 is a typical silk damask withfigures that have the horizontal ribbed effect of grosgrain taflfetabecause of the coarseness of the partly covered wefts, but that arereally in weft twill, as can be seen from the back that is a pronouncedwarjj twill with sharp diagonal ribs. We have then in the figuresboth diagonal rib and horizontal line effects that contrast boldly withthe vertical line effects of the satin ground, giving the peculiar con-trasts of light and shade cliaracteristic
