Byzantine - Crucifixion - Walters 7165
Summary
An elaborate halo surrounds the head of Christ, who is flanked by the Virgin and St. John. Small representations of the sun and moon above the cross symbolize the cosmic importance of the Crucifixion. Compare this panel with other similar ivories (e.g. WAM 71.113 and 71.244) and note the subtle differences in the way each artist treats the same subject.
Romei means "man from Rome", identifying people who once lived in Rome and now living elsewhere - Eastern Roman Empire with its capital in Constantinople..
