On front: pen and dark brown ink sketch of Whistler's standing butterfly, with wings raised, tail above head ending in a squiggle and arrow, with small letter c.
On back: pen and purple ink sketch of Whistler's butterfly in similar pose, marked out in same ink, with small letter c. Used as a signature for a letter to the editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, dated 1 August, published 4 August 1891.

Cream wove paper, card weight with printed butterfly on small piece of tan paper cut from the first edition (1890) of The Gentle Art of Making Enemies.
On back: blue stamp of L.C. Division of Prints (Lugt 677).
