The course in mechanical drawing aims to cover the fundamentalprinciples of constructive drafting, to cultivate the essentials of goodworkmanship—namely, accuracy, thoroughness, and neatness. Like otherbranches of applied mathematics, it strengthens the inventive and con-structive ability of the student; at the same time it tends to develop alove for systematic, precise and neat work. On the industrial field aknowledge of mechanical drawing is indispensable. All constructive workis first planned in a drawing. The old cut-and-try method is both toocostly and too slow. In the United States Patent Office models are nolonger required, but complete mechanical drawings may be used instead,thus saving a vast amount of time and space. The great feats of to-dayin engineering would be impossible without the knowledge and use ofconstructive drawing.
