Pigskin binding. German (Buxheim), late 15th century. Pigskin over wooden boards, blind-stamped with large rose and acanthus leaf. Palimpsest catch for clasp on front board, back missing. From the library of the Benedictine monastery at Buxheim. Wood has been used by binders from the earliest time to the present.
