CHAPTER VII HORSE FOR DINNER FORAGE is a big difficulty just now. Themilitary give us doctors a forage allow-ance, dry mealies principally, but nearly all thecabs have stopped for want of forage for thehorses, and the trams are going to be stoppednext week, I hear. There are no horses forthe milk or bread carts ; everybody has to fetchhis own. Presently there will be no carts inthe place except the military ones, the doctors,and the hearse. At last (January loth) we have begun tofeel the siege a little more acutely. OnMonday the people who went for meat weretold that they could only take half theirallowance in beef; the other half must betaken in horseflesh or else gone without.Lots of people went without. Iborse tot Dinner m has become so scarce, plenty of horses whichare now in fair condition must be turnedout on the veldt, and there they will soonbecome very poor. The authorities thereforevery wisely decided that they had better beeaten before this happened, and so started tokill them off. Somehow one does not quite relish the ideaof eating horse, but it must be simply becauseone has not been used to doing so. Thehorse is a clean enough feeder, and oughtto be all right. Monday was not my meatday, but I went along on Tuesday and tookmy whack of horseflesh like the rest. Bythe way, I had managed for the first timeon that day to get a meat ticket whichallowed me to go in at the exit door and getmy allowance at once without waiting. I hadnot before tried to do so, as I did not wantto take an unfair advantage ; but I foundthat a few people were getting these ticketswho had certainly not such good reasons forwanting them as I had, so I waded in andgot one too.
