In conformity with (he resolution of the last general meeting, the Directors have causeda series of returns to be made of the number of persons employed on salaries and ondays wages, constituting so material a part of the current expenditure. From the re-turns of six fortnights it appears the average number of men in the Companys employreceiving days wages is 633, and of agents and clerks on salaries, 73, The Directorshave also prepared a statement in explanation of the system of management pursued inthe general business of the concern, and which they propose to read to the presentmeeting. It has been their anxious endeavour to introduce a safe and judicious economyinto every branch of the expenditure. The Directors are happy in being able to state, that the business of ihe Company isgradually increasing. In the half year ending 31st December last the average quantityof merchandize conveyed per
