Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) nest, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, 2015.
Summary
Previously, Anna's hummingbirds bred only in northern Baja California and southern California. However, with the modern transplantation of ornamental plants into residential areas throughout the Pacific Coast and inland deserts this bird has been able to greatly expand its breeding range. They even have the northernmost year-round range of any hummingbird. This hummer prefers open-wooded or shrubby areas for breeding and females will raise the young without assistance from the males.
