Ancient and modern armour contrasted (BM 1927,0308.133)

description

Summary

A man in armour (left), his face covered by a closed visor, holding a shield and a tilting spear, faces an officer in Light Horse uniform, who stands in profile to the left with folded arms, looking at the armour-clad man. Between and slightly behind them stands a military officer wearing a large cocked hat and gorget, long tight pantaloons, with low shoes. He inspects the armoured man through a quizzing-glass. The subject was suggested by a visit to Market Bosworth, near Bosworth Field, where weapons and accoutrements are frequently dug up. 4 March 1797
