Esq., President of the NorthernConfederacy : Sir,—Having just returned from a trip through Vir- ginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, permit me toinform you that you will get whipped out of yourboots. To-day I met a gentleman from Anna, Illinois,and although he voted for you he says that the momentyour troops leave Cairo they will get the spots knockedout of them. It was ten years after the death of the President thathis son learned the probable circumstances under whichthe pioneer Lincoln removed to the West, and the in-timate relations which subsisted between his familyand the most celebrated man in early Western annals.There is little doubt that it was on account of his asso-ciation with the famous Daniel Boone that AbrahamLincoln went to Kentucky. The families had for acentury been closely allied. By the will of MordecaiLincoln, to which reference has been made, his lovingfriend and neighbor George Boone was made a trus-tee to assist his widow in the care of the property.Squire Boone, the father of Daniel, was one of theappraisers who made the inventory of Mordecai Lin-colns estate. One of the numerous Abraham Lincolnsmarried a Miss Anna Boone in 1760.* The intercoursebetween the families was kept up after the Boones hadremoved to North Carolina and John Lincoln hadgone to Virginia.
