A real scene, 12th. Feby- 1829. No. IV. (BM 1868,0612.1306)

See No. 15949. Dr. Knox is being suspended by the neck from the branch of a tree, above a bonfire. A crowd of men and boys shout, hold up their hats, and hurl missiles. Above: 'Genuine Speech, 12th Feby. 1829. "Gentlemen—I am an older man than any of you, permit me therefore to give you this advice:—never allow yourselves to be too much elevated or depressed by trifles"'. Below the title: 'The Newington Auto da Fe;—or quite pleased with their Subject, although, noxii generis', followed by four lines of verse beginning '"Quickly and gaily, they pull'd him on high.'
[2] Below is a secondary design, a drinking-bout: Knox stands over a punch¬bowl, surrounded by his students: all lift their glasses; Knox raises the gold cup (see No. 15951). At his elbow stands the young man with the patch over his eye (see No. 15943). Some of the youths lie dead-drunk on the floor. 1829
