Zachary Taylor, the people's choice for 12th president

description

Summary

Print shows a Whig campaign banner for the 1848 presidential election. In the center of a facsimile cloth banner is an oval bust portrait of candidate Zachary Taylor in military uniform. Surrounding the oval, on a field decorated with stars, are oval bust length portraits of the eleven former American Presidents (clockwise from top): George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, James K. Polk, John Tyler, Martin Van Buren, John Quincy Adams, James Madison, and John Adams. At the top of the banner, flanking Washington, John Adams (left), and Jefferson (right) are American and presidential flags. At the bottom of the banner, inscribed on a ribbon are the words "The Presidents of the United States." An almost identical banner was produced by Currier for Democratic candidate Lewis Cass (no. 1848-4).

James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States (1817–1825) and the last President from the Founding Fathers. "Preparation for war is a constant stimulus to suspicion and ill will."

Born: Feb. 9, 1773 Died: April 4, 1841 Presidential Term: March 4, 1841 - April 4, 1841 Vice President: John Tyler William Henry Harrison, American military officer and politician was the ninth President of the United States (1841), the oldest President to be elected at the time. Delivering the longest inaugural address in U.S. history, he came down with pneumonia that made his 30-day presidency the shortest in U.S. history. On his 32nd day, he became the first to die in office, serving the shortest tenure in U.S. Presidential history. "All the measures of the Government are directed to the purpose of making the rich richer and the poor poorer." /William Henry Harrison/

Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Before his presidency, Taylor was a career officer in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general. Zachary Taylor was a national hero in the United States Army from the time of the Mexican-American War and the War of 1812. "I have always done my duty. I am ready to die. My only regret is for the friends I leave behind me."
