very beautiful whenthey are almost covered with silk stitchery.In the dragon portiere very little of theoriginal creatures is visible, as they are almostcovered with silken stitches worked in variousdirections to suit the contour of the dragons.Quite a number of colours are used. A pearlygrey silk is chosen for the high lights. Thereis something very beautiful and graceful inthe needlework swirls on the background.Heavy plush is appliqued on the bottom ofthe curtain, but a plain band would be moredecorative. The portiere with the trellis-work at thetop is formed by a panel of corded silk beinglet into the plush. Six beasties bought ready-made are charmingly scattered at irregularintervals on the silk. In doing this panel atrellis of chenille is worked first. Variationis given to the background by a paler shadebeing introduced in the middle width of silkwhich is run horizontally across the portiere.The designs are basted on before the trellis isworked, and they seem to stand out more,

It will benoticed that they vary somewhat, not only indesign but in their treatment. The effect ofseaweed is cleverly indicated in the designs onthe background. One of the illustrations shows more difficultand intricate work. It is made from anOriental piece of brocade, which is broughtinto relief by the beautiful shading whichemphasizes the design. The pale delicatetones should be seen to be appreciated. Aquaint brocade of small pattern is used for theside hems. Stitchery is also added to these.Such a work of art would be a treasuredpossession in any family, and yet what infinitepleasure it would give the worker, not onlyin the doing of the work itself, but in thechoice of colouring.
