rmers, d.c. motor, so that if the a.c. supply fails the signal currentwill be maintained from storage batteries which are of500-amp.-hr. capacity. The Permanent Way Normal permanent way construction consist of 100-lb. T -section rails double spiked to untreated ties of hardred gum, ironbark or boxwood, dimensioned 9 ft. x 10 in. x5 in. and spaced 2 ft. 10 in. centers at intermediate tieearid 8 ft. 8 in. centers at joints. The approximate depthof bluest-one ballast is 15 in., of which 10 in. is under theties. The track gage is 5 ft. 3 in. Tracks are centered11 ft. 8 in. apart with provision for increase of this dimen-sion. Minimum structure clearance above the platformlevel on tangent track is 7 ft. from the center of the track. This dimension is increased to 8 ft. on curves of 800-ft.radius. The minimum curve is on the Flinders Street(Melbourne) viaduct and this has a radius of 600 ft. The line between Sandringham and Broadmeadows, which may be taken as typical of the system, contains a

STANDARD SIX-CAR TRAIN WITH THREE MOTOR CARS and with the operating levers controlling the 1500-voltd.c. switch gear. The switch house is three stories high. The ground flooris used for the installation of the cable terminal boxes, groimding switches, and potential transformers. Thesecond floor is used for the oil-switch cells and currenttransformers, and the third floor for busbar chambers. The operating gallery is also provided for on the sec-ond floor, and the 20,0b0-volt oil switches, 1500-volt d.c.switch gear and the 2200-volt signal supply switching arecontrolled from this point. The 15,000-volt d.c. positivebusbar and switch gear is located underneath the operatinggallery, and the negative and equalizer busbars are placedin the basement below the rotary converters. The signaling bays are equipped with 65-kw. motor-generator sets for providing a supply of 2200-volt single-phase current from the 440-volt side of the three-phaseauxiliary transformers to the signaling circuit.
