Dampfmaschinen, Motoren, Lokomotiven. 1781 patentierte James Watt eine Dampfmaschine, die eine kontinuierliche Drehbewegung erzeugte. Die zehn PS starken Motoren von Watt ermöglichten den Antrieb einer breiten Palette von Fertigungsmaschinen. Die Motoren könnten überall dort eingesetzt werden, wo Wasser und Kohle oder Holzbrennstoffe gewonnen werden könnten. Bis 1883 waren Motoren mit einer Leistung von 10.000 PS realisierbar. Die Dampfmaschine war eine der wichtigsten Technologien der industriellen Revolution.
